Nixon resigned before he was impeached (though the process had started)

An impeachment is basically a trial by parliament - in the first step, there is a vote on the articles of impeachment (basically the allegations) and if that passes, the Senate holds a trial and votes on the issue. If it passes by a 2/3 majority, the person being impeached is removed from office.
