For me, it depends on context. Like, on HSX there's a guy who complains continually about Ghostbusters every time it comes up, how it's going to bomb,

how he looks forward to it bombing, how it's disrespectful to the original movie, how it looks bad, that casting four women was a mistake, that it should be called Fembusters. But don't worry, he's totally not sexist!
Okay, maybe Ghostbusters does look bad, but if all he wants to talk about is how awful it is and he just repeats a bunch of stock phrases used by other people who also dislike the movie rather than his own thoughts, I'm going to believe that he's sexist no matter how much he protests.
And then if he says something about how Hillary would be a bad president, I'm going to think "well yeah, that's because he's sexist"
