Thinking about it, another reason it's less secure is that all it takes is for someone to guess the password. (Like with how Palin's emai was hacked)

I'm not sure about your first sentence - I'd expect an email provider to be just as reliable in providing security as the government, but yeah, if there was a breach you would be just another customer, and not informed about the breach or what was compromised.
