And if that's his only instance (which sounds likely) then it seems like the regular version would be the opposite.
I'm also not sure that straight Sulu is what Roddenberry wanted. It sounds like we would have liked (or at least been open to) a gay character. It was just a battle he couldn't afford to fight. And perhaps the reason Sulu never had an onscreen romance was so that his sexuality was never defined. So that when it got to a more accepting time he could reveal that Sulu wasn't straight. Unfortunately he never lived to see that time.
