If you're expecting 1m hits and you get 5m, as long as you designed it well, you're Ok. But if you designed it for 1m hits and you get 100m hits there's no amount of resources you can chuck at the issue to fix a underplanned piece of software. I found those discussions fascinating (if not baffling).
