Thinking this through, how could he possibly know the same buffoonery that got him the nomination would hurt him in the general election? -- (edited)

Or the opposite, why would he use the same behavior in the general election that he thinks would hurt him in the primaries? The logic doesn't follow.
If he was trying to win the nomination then throw the election, the mistakes should have just started the past few months. They've been going on for a year now, though. His supporters don't seem to care. I'm not sure how he could possible rely on that type of irrationality by his supporters.
