The thing I heard that made a lot of sense to me (spoilerish)

Is that the Duffer Brothers conceptually wanted each of the three story strands to have different primary influences.

So the Joyce/Sheriff Hopper (adults) storyline is primarily a Spielberg vibe, the Nancy/Jonathan (teenagers) story is a John Carpenter vibe and the kids' story is a Stephen King vibe.
