I think the theory is that it's a meshing of people at a stage where they are not looking for commitment.

The "typical" arrangement is a divorced woman who has had commitment (maybe kids) already, and is looking to experience her freedom, while the younger guy is looking to sow his wild oats. The younger women are looking for commitment that the younger guys (in theory) aren't looking for yet.
