the lift is basically strategy. the toss is supposed to be neutral (has to be straight down the middle of the two teams), so the tossing team picks a

spot, throws is there, and they chuck a guy up in the air because then he has a better chance at grabbing it.
rugby league gets rid of the scrums, and I find it kind of dull, but basically they're a way to start play after certain stoppages. just imagine if they had the O/D lines make contact first, and then chucked the ball underneath them. you try and get possession of the ball, but only with your feet.
