I don't know that "handed to you" is quite right... You still need to go out and explore to get the actual resources.

They hand you the plans for the items but you still need to collect iron or the plutonium or whatever for it.
The basics of what you need to keep flying and exploring (plutonium, carbon, etc...) are fairly plentiful. You'll have to go out and get them, but there mostly laying around. Warp power seems more rare so far, the only antimatter I've acquired was given to me by an NPC so I'm not sure where I'd get that naturally yet.
Combat's a little less forgiving. Calling up your menu to recharge your gun/shields/suit doesn't pause the action so the bad guys are still shooting at you.
(I haven't died yet, but I saw on the twitch stream yesterday that if you do then your "grave" appears on your radar and if you find it before you die again then you can get your inventory back.)
