Also a layman, but I work in infectious diseases so I'll contribute my two cents.

All infections which require hospitalization or develop in hospital are serious, but if mom-in-law is generally healthy otherwise, she'll probably be fine. The concern is that it leads to pneumonia or sepsis and then you've got a much more serious issue.
