But there wasn't, say, hugely negative responses to their trailers, campaigns to boycott the movie, people angry about it existing, etc -- (edited)

It was more "Oh, they're remaking Total Recall, that's a disappointing" and then "Yeah, that wasn't good"
There was no loud shouting along the lines of "They are disrespecting the original movie! Quaid doesn't even get his ass to Mars!"
