I think this gets at it. Ghostbusters is a "universe" because of the sequel and comics and cartoons. And the new film ignored all that

to reboot things instead of building.
*That's* why I have no desire to see it and is a large part of why I dislike the new Star Trek movies.
I'll give Trek credit for at least coming up with a reason for the reboots that pays lip service to them being in the same universe as TOS, Next Gen, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, etc.
