I would say there's a 70-30 odds that he is telling the truth, maybe more..

The fact that the police is not finding evidence of the robbery means squat. And yes, other than one detail here or there, it's a 100% believable story, completely in character for Rio (or São Paulo, for that matter)
The video of them arriving at the village is somewhat damning. I was robbed at gunpoint pointed to my head once, and I was shaking for hours.. But they are Olympians, so what the hell do I know about courage?
Anyway, remember that they did not press charges (I can see why they would not, too), only told their Mums about it, so maybe they were not necessarily planning for it to take this dimension..
