In volleyball, in particular, but also soccer, it's very common here for people to boo before service, or one has control of the ball.. Similar to what's done in basketball when someone is about to make a FT.. I agree that boos carry a particular conotation, but that's not what's meant by them.. I agree that an alternative would be ideal..
There's of course the booing the Russians, which is somewhat generic and cruel, but I would guess it's actually done by a lot of people from others places, too..
Then there's what happened in gymnastics, and to a greater extent in pole vault.. There's a lot of people around in my FB bending backwards trying to justify those, or say that it's better than have banana peels thrown at athletes.. But I agree with the sentiment that it's horrible, and embarassing to me as a Brazilian.. There are other ways.. You can chant Brazil, Brazil while the guy is preparing.. You can chant his/her name.. That's all fine.. And then, we he actually getting ready to do his thing, you shut the fuck up..
And never, never fucking ever, boo a guy when his name is called to receive his medal.. I was crying almost as much as Lavillenie last night, so embarrassed I was..
