i'm so sorry you went through that, especially as a kid.
share: my mom dramatically left my dad/me (all the other siblings were of adult age) when i was a kid and moved out of state with a fast new husband, and we were out of touch for some time. i had to come to accept her as she was, past and flaws and all, when she came back to the area later. there were challenges to get past, for sure; and i can't imagine how much harder it would have been if a lot more time had passed.
i think amanda had a different thing. there was closeness into adulthood (i remember her dad bringing her lunch and buying kiehl's for her, of all things) then bad badness in recent years. that's a lot of buy-in; and so i understand wanting to let him know and maybe get a little of that pride from him, even if it's from someone who made such impactful bad choices.
