Admittedly, I'm probably overidentifying because of my own past drinking problems, but maybe he's still just too ashamed to make the first move.
Or maybe he's still struggling with his alcoholism, in which case he could completely let you down again if you open yourself up too much.
But I think that whether or not he gives you something you want from him, it might do you some good to know that you reached out.
