In response to "LIR: Company will "allow" me to work if I apply for a replacement Soc Sec card, and provide the application receipt until the card arrives." by howie

Would you rather they break federal law? 'Cause they're bending it as far as they can. And farther than I would ever advise a client.

Yeah, it's a huge inconvenience and there many parts about the I-9 laws and regulations that break common sense. But it is the law Congress set and the President signed. It's not your employer's fault that they have to follow some nonsensical law that doesn't allow for an exception for former employees.

I had to go through the same bullshit when I got this job. My direct supervisor was a guy I'd known since 1993. We were at Oregon State together, and I gave him his first volunteer job on a political campaign.

But we are a nation of laws, not personal decisions.
So if you're gonna get pissed, get pissed at the right people.

The enhanced I-9 requirements were a fallout of the Real ID Act. You can find the list of House members who voted for the Real ID Act here ...

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2005/roll031.xml

And a list of Senators who voted in favor of the Real ID Act here ...

http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00109

Those are the folks you should be pissed at. Them and President Bush.

And if you want to vent your angry spleen in a constructive way, write an email to your Congressional Representative and both Senators asking them to build in some common sense exceptions to the I-9 requirements. You might mention something like "a former employee who returns to the same employer within 2 years after previously departing will not need to provide proof of identity." Or something like that.

That is what would solve your problem and eliminate all the needless effing hassle you have to go through. If more Members of Congress -- in addition to the ones who already support ideas like this -- would follow common sense rather than a goddamn blindly vitriolic OHMYGODTHEMUSLIMSARETAKING
OVERTHECOUNTRYANDIMPOSINGSHARIALAW nonsense.

The good news is that your wait at the Social Security office should be about 30-45 max on a Wednesday at the end of the month. Never go there during the first three days of any month. It'll be like Hotel California.
