even if it's not very far away - and you realize that you no longer have any kind of control or influence on what they're doing - and you just have to sit back and hope they're doing the right thing - yeah, that sucks.

But if you've done the mentoring part correctly - you'll be amazed when your kid reports in and has done everything you wanted him to do and more to prepare himself for the first week of class.
