This is his wheelhouse. "Low-budget action star" gives more opportunities and $$$ than "humourous supporting meathead"

Plus maybe he was contracted to it when he made the first movie.

(I should add an IMO - I don't know what Statham gets paid for sure, but I expect he'd have more leverage in a Statham movie than in a supporting role
