This is about shoring up domestic political support - how this looks to the rest of the world is less important

It's still a contentious issue domestically - for example, one of the best-known Armenian advocates in Turkey was assassinated a couple of years ago by a Turkish nationalist.
On the positive side, Turkey and Armenia are pretty close to reestablishing formal diplomatic relations and opening the border between the two countries. I wonder if this is just an excuse for the AK party to show how tough it is on the issue before announcing closer ties with Armenia
