basically the problem comes down to what private corporations see as efficiencies.

They reuse stories across a chain, getting one person to do the work of 4 or 5. Great for a profit margin, but it reduces the amount of stories told out there. They was brief talk of merging our paper with one based in a town 30 miles away, which is insane. There's no way I (or chillingly, 30 miles away me) could cover the important stories with the same depth, or even get to them at all. You just need more feet on the ground getting to those stories.
