not necessarily - mergers and consolidation can affect news coverage too, especially of local issues

For example, there are two local dailies in Vancouver, but they're both owned by the same company (which also owns 12 community papers, a TV station, etc).
For a different viewpoint on national and international stories, Vancouverites have a lot of other news sources, but not so much for coverage of local issues
