It's not clear to me whether he left or was fired, though some folks seem to be leaning fired.

There are a couple of trains of thoughts I've seen (no idea the validity of either):
- Doug Parker, AA's CEO is only 54. There's no reason at this point to se him going anywhere anytime soon. Thus, Kirby's upward mobility is non-existent. Meanwhile, United's CEO just had heart transplant surgery last year. Hopefully he's healthy and strong following that, but it does seem more likely that UA's CEO will retire before AA's CEO does. If Kirby wants to be a CEO someday, United seems his better chance.
- Kirby was AA's President and Chief Operating Office. Operations (on time status, etc) have been dreadful at AA.
