I guess removing the related events resulted in people doing fewer Destiny public events.

That and not having any on the Dreadnaught.
Your first daily gold completion gives a legendary engram, 15 legendary marks, a chance of an exotic shard and other stuff. I think this is per character, but I'm not sure. That would mean that you could go from zero to max legendary marks every 4-5 days just from public events.
