In addition to what TWuG said, he also strikes right to the emotional heart of people who have been completely disenfranchised over the past decade.

And while certain segments of the conservative wing of the Republican party are primarily responsible for that disenfranchisement, he and other leaders of that conservative wing have done a masterful job of shifting blame to others -- elitist liberals, President Obama, foreign countries, etc. etc. etc.
