it wasn't vast amounts over, but there was some padding because sometimes people came and went from the meetings and it wasn't clear who all would -- (edited)

Two reasons - it means that everyone at the meeting has a choice, and no one is stuck with the tuna salad sandwich.

this actually comes up here sometimes. generally speaking, every meeting has about twice as much food as is ever eaten. -- nm*
