I'll bet they're erring on the safe side to avoid any sort of defamation/libel claim.


Given his litigious history, if I was counsel to the NYT, I'd advise them to put qualify every sentence with either "legally" or "allegedly" -- unless they had solid, irrefutable proof of fraud or criminal conduct.
