yes, there are soil amenders that you can work into the clay. worked pretty well for me. i top with compost once or twice per year as well. -- nm

clay is clay, load it with a lot of sawdust and manure and you can bake 'bricks' literally on a hot day, worse....

you can't really break down clay, just dilute it with peat or topsoil. -- nm
