That actually could be a cause. Li-ion pouch batteries expand with usage. If they get too hot or too little "slack" was left for expansion -- (edited)

the pouch can rupture. And when that happens things go boom when the li-ion material reacts with the air.
Though I doubt they are using Li-ion pouches. They're probably using prismatic batteries that have a hard case.
