Then drafting Eli would have been awkward.

the point is this - SD was in a particular position prior to drafting and then trading Eli for those four parts. If you subtract that and add Eli, does that make them a SB team? I don't think it does. Whereas for the Giants, Eli was the right part that they needed to help them make that run. Both boats rise, the Giants were just higher to begin with.
