I have a list of upgrades and what they cost so if attacked I can see what expensive item can use up the most stuff

You can donate excess wood to the island mill.
But one thing you can/should do is build up your walls, most folks that consider pillaging consider the size of the town and cost of taking it. THey would look for a town with lower walls as that is what multiplies the defender's power. If you have 50 units and lvl 10 walls you have 100 units wortht of defence power. a spy 'could' open one breech, that drops the wall multiplier down 10%, a catapult or mortar can knock more holes in our walls, or they can have a whole LOT of soldiers to overwhelm
but if you have strong walls, a snoop can realize holy shit this is gonna be a lot more trouble than its worth.
at my main town I have lvl 19 walls around my lvl 12 town. It helps to build up your architect and carpenter as they drop the cost one percent per level, I can see it in the cost of the gov residence where on one colony its over 4,000 units of marble cheaper
