Depends. Different principles have different degrees of importance.

For instance I tend to follow traffic laws on the principle of obey the law being a good thing.

But I also value human life and would violate traffic laws to save a life.

Perhaps, and this is not intended as an apology for the Admin's actions, but a potential explanation, it is considered more important to bring a Muslim country into the EU than it is to get hung up on an event 100 years in the past.
