The only rule is if your porch light is on, kids can ring your doorbell.
If you're not home and don't give out candy, you run the risk of getting egged / TPd / etc.

I think we have warped memories of how late we actually were out on Halloween as kids. It was pitch black when ours "ended" at 7pm
