you just check in *as soon as* online check-in opens and pick two seats together, it's never been a problem. -- (edited)

Tons of people don't check in at that point, and lots of people haven't pre-paid for seats, so there are always lots to choose from. Even if we *do* already have assigned seats, i always check to see if there are better seats when i check in.
worse case scenario we sit apart for 8 hours (it has never happened). But, we'd live.
