I'm sure none was protected in the warehouse. I don't know the formula for how much could be loaded and cargo ships were very much more expensive before.
People howled about the lack of gold pillaging in the v3.0 upgrade predictably as people ran in the Red and just pillaged for Upkeep. But I think it worked out.
