In response to "Speaking of style, I could probably use a professorial makeover." by psilotum

First, you get in your car and head north on I-5, drive about an hour. When you get to Burlington, take the exit and go to the outlet mall.

Then you need to go into the Eddie Bauer store, the Nautica Store, the Ralph Lauren Store and The Gap store. I generally have the best luck at Eddie Bauer, ymmv. I don't know your size, but Crash is a 16 neck, extra long (33/34) length sleeves and EB always has plenty. They have a whole section devoted to dress and sports shirts. Start looking for basic colors that look good on you, don't be afraid of pink, yellow, or lavender--all of them look can look quite attractive whatever your orientation. Also, don't be afraid of stripes or the thin windowpane checks, you can do some amazing looks with a rep striped tie against a striped shirt if the colors are right. If you feel you absolutely MUST have short sleeves, look for the "distressed" cotton sport shirts, they look a little faded, but comfy. Never ever ever wear a tie with short sleeves or you'll look like Dilbert. If your arms get hot, simply roll up your sleeves to the elbow--besides, that look is sexy. If you like the casual look of a t under a shirt, pick up some of them while you're there, they're well made and only slightly more expensive than similar shirts from Walmart. However, the material is heavier, pre-shrunk, and the colors will match the rest of the prevailing spring/summer line up in the store. Go for 100% cotton and pay a couple of dollars more for the dress shirts that have wrinkle resistant treatment added. Just about everything in the store will be a button down, but that's good--you won't mess up as much. They usually have a rack of pants on sale/clearance, mostly khaki with shades running from a light sand to a yellowish tan. While you're in the back of the store look at their flip flops, small camping gear and clearance winter coats and jackets. I swear you can clean up in that place. There's also a "club" you can join where you get a 20% discount on your total purchase after you've spent X amount of dollars.

Nautica has a lot of the same stuff, but they're more casual. Look for shorts, t shirts and ligt sweatshirts there, as well as their baggy jeans.

To dress to impress, you probably should pick up a couple of long sleeved dress shirts at Ralph Lauren. I love their pale yellow button down, it looks nice on everybody. Other than that, try a navy/white or red/white thin stripe. They look good with a suit or stand alone.

Finally, go to The Gap outlet and look for play clothes and more pants. Also, make sure you look in the corners of the store--Gap owns Banana Republic and we've picked up some really nice BR stuff for about 1/4 the regular retail price there.

good luck
:)

Remember--ditch the short sleeved dress shirts. You do not want to become a Dilbert :)
