Among other things, this was the most fundamental cause IMO of where we are. Of course government sucks if the people responsible won't do their jobs

But it wasn't a break down in fundamental ideologies. Those existed before. It was a calculated to obstruct to cause the failure. It undermines the very basis of government. And the wrong people are being punished for it.
