The protest vote argument is part of it but I think a far bigger attraction was that he told them that their condition was due to factors that blamed others. Hence the take back America crap. He told them it wasn't their fault. Notice that when he back tracked on the Mexican wall for a few days this summer there was a general freak out in his base.

The fact that they elected a jet flyin' NYC (maybe) Billionaire to fix their problems is funny.
