We had a fire referrendum on the ballot in our township. I was watching on Facebook the replies whenever the firefighers would post about it. The -- (edited)

comments again and again (and also for the Safe Roads ammendment - and this also may be colored by IL politics) was that people were upset about paying more and more taxes.

I don't think it was entirely about the amount but the perception that their taxes were going to waste inside the government or urban environments and not coming back to them in ways that directly benefited them in their community. Education, healthcare costs were common. I'm sure there are more.

I think this is also evident that the referendum passed only after they were able to explain that they had not raised this tax since 1997 and it was independent of other taxes they are paying.
