Representatives in the time they were growing up worked on issues and compromised. Nixon, horrible as he was, wanted to institue national health care. The huge amounts being spent on the Vietnam War made it fiscally impossible. Even up to the Clinton years, there was some amount of cooperation and compromise. The fact that people since then continually either vote against their own self interests or are more worried about gay marriage and abortion than jobs, has allowed Congress to get away with its Balkanization. I blame the rise of the religious right and their effect, through political pressure, on education and media. There is money for people now to get the same things boomers got from the government, but it all goes to defense spending and fights over social issues. If people would vote in Representatives who would actually work together to create jobs, instead of blocking Obama jobs bills three separate times, the entire economy would expand. And this fighting between generations, races, urban and rural, is a distraction that allows this to continue, instead of focusing on improving society as a whole.
