he'd clearly lost his faculties. He was a doddering old man after only a couple of years in office. By year six, it was an open secret that he wasn't in charge any longer. The dementia news wasn't a shock to anybody in the press.

Yep. He was also considered far too shallow and uninformed - "merely an actor" - during the primaries, but he managed to dispel that perception.
