The Honorable Patrick Toomey
248 Russell Senate Office Building
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510
Senator Toomey:
Congratulations on your reelection. In your campaign advertisements, you argued that you were an independent voice who would be able stand up to the president and your party when needed. As your constituent and a proud resident of Pennsylvania, I intend to hold you to that promise, and to your responsibility to represent all Pennsylvanians in the United States Senate.
In light of the campaign he has run, the election of Donald Trump as our next president has raised many fears and concerns among myself, my friends and family and our community regarding the future direction of our country. I hope you will use your position as our senator to address these concerns in a way that moves our country forward. Specifically, I ask you to do the following:
-- Ensure that all Americans are able to maintain their access to healthcare they currently receive as a result of the Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare") and support efforts to expand access to affordable healthcare to the remaining uninsured.
-- Ensure that women maintain access to all of their healthcare options, including reproductive care, by supporting funding for Planned Parenthood and opposing efforts to restrict access to care.
-- Ensure that LGBT* rights are protected by supporting continued equality for their families and by opposing policies that result in exposing transgender individuals to harassment over their use of restroom facilities and in their day-to-day lives.
-- Protect the rights of African-Americans to live free of harassment by law enforcement and support proactive engagement to rebuild trust between police officers and the communities they serve.
-- Protect the rights of Muslims and immigrant communities to live free of harassment, recognize the important contributions they make to our country and strongly condemn all acts of violence against them. (See the enclosed article, “Campuses Confront Hostile Acts Against Minorities After Donald Trump’s Election”, The New York Times, November 10, 2016.)
-- Work to strengthen respect for our democratic institutions, including the press, to encourage dissenting views to be heard and to allow for a robust discussion of issues that affect us all.
Please use your position to stand up against divisiveness and hate. Our country works best when all voices are heard and respected. While certain policies may be a matter of political debate, civil rights, human rights and simple common decency are not. I hope that together we can work for a better America.
With hope for the future,
Your constituent,
