I think there's always some equivocation when someone on your "side" does something bad, because even if you don't agree with what that person does,

you understand where they are coming from and the feelings that are involved.

But I'm not sure whether Muslim leaders speaking out is more common now that before - and if it is, there are a bunch of reasons why that could be. There are more Muslims here than there were two decades ago, the consequences of terrorism and groups like IS are plainer now, there are more questions within the various Muslim communities about these issues, etc
