You still have a movie if it's just about aliens.

The daughter is the subplot. It would still make an interesting movie (which would still make me uncomfortable) but it wasn't required for the alien plot.
And the more I think about the non-linear time element, the more it bothers me as much as Interstellar. It just feels like a cheat.
