It's hard not to see the trend starting with Goldwater or Reagan...

As evidence of the trend/decline - see how far we've come, with candidates, even since Dubya. With him there was the bare minimum requirement that he appear coherent and knowledgeable. When he didn't, he paid for it. Now, we have a guy who is brazen about his ignorance.
I just scanned the article for now but I can't disagree with the broader points it raises.
