absorb, say it's a liquid for arguments sake, being subsumed, soaked up so that you can't distinguish it from the whatever that sucked it up
adsorb, being taken up by another substance but can be easily separated from that which has adsorbed it.
I understood it when I was 17. Great chemistry teacher, made everything interesting.
