If he's all you have and you're not winning or close to a title what he can bring in return could be enough to blossom -- (edited)

into a very good team. It's a gamble, for sure. But right now they know they're going to lose and there's no one in the minors that can help them. What does keeping him do besides sell merchandise? If you can get four to six guys with three or four top level talent that is something to consider. Trout is worth teams emptying their minors and adding in MLB talent on top of that.
They get better by adding lots of talent that they don't have outside of one guy.
