Pence being spoken out against publicly but respectfully by the cast of the Hamilton performance he attended—and Trump's embarrassingly unpresidential complaint about the event on Twitter—is a reminder of what has always been true for artists, and worse in climates like the one Trump is fostering: there will be those who want to take your art, but don't want you to come with it. Who want your fame and your accomplishments, but not your bodies. Who will consume what you make, but not keep you safe so you can make more or even just live your life in peace. Who desire your art, but will deny you the reality that made it necessary. (And how dare you speak out against them, once they've paid to own what you made.)
