I know nothing of the source material or the previous tv show. That said, I see DG as comedy/mystery. I find it to be quite funny. It may be a little dark, but I don't think I'd call it gritty or a drama.

As for Max Landis, I'm remain convinced that he wants a large dose of humor in everything he does until you can show me statements of his to the contrary.
